Come Back Into Balance

After the busyness of the holiday season, many of us long for more ease and balance in our lives. Today, I’m happy to share some powerful wisdom from someone whose work I’ve greatly benefited from for many years—intuitive energy healer Wendy De Rosa. Below is a newly edited version of an article that originally ran in Spirituality & Health magazine five years ago on how to come back into energetic balance by working with our chakras. It includes a lovely six-minute guided meditation—one that I return to again and again for balance, strength, and peace.

Living in balance has never come easily for me. I always default to output versus input— being productive instead of resting. I’m quick to offer assistance, but hesitant to ask for help. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned the importance of spending more time on self-care, but staying in balance remains a daily challenge.

Thanks to Wendy De Rosa, I’ve recently learned a delightful practice that’s helping me shed habitual patterns and gain access to a boundless source of nourishment. Wendy—founder of the School of Intuitive Studies and author of the book, Becoming an Empowered Empath: How to Clear Energy, Set Boundaries & Embody Your Intuition teaches how working with our chakras can help us access life-force energy for vitality and balance.

If you’re not familiar with chakras, they are the energetic power centers in our bodies first written about in ancient Vedic Hindu texts thousands of years ago, often described as wheels of energy. We each have seven chakras, starting with the root chakra (located at our tailbone), followed by the sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra, heart chakra, throat chakra, third eye chakra, and finally the crown chakra, which sits just on top of our head.

Chakras are the seven power centers in our bodies first written about in ancient Vedic Hindu texts thousands of years ago. The first—our root chakra—is located at our tailbone, and is associated with grounding and safety. The second—our sacral chakra—is linked to creativity and emotional flow. Then comes the solar plexus chakra (our center of personal power and confidence), the heart chakra (home to love and compassion), the throat chakra (communication and truth-telling), and the third eye chakra (intuition and inner vision). The seventh chakra—the crown chakra that is located just above the top of our head—relates to spiritual connection and higher awareness.

Wendy explains that the front and back of our chakras have different roles in how we extend and receive energy. It’s only when energy flows freely through all sides of our chakras that we can experience optimal physical and emotional health and vitality.

Wendy says, “It is through the front body that we interact with others, form attachments, and organize our thoughts—activities that are very influenced by our particular life circumstances and conditioning. Over time, giving and receiving primarily through the front body can be very depleting. In contrast, the back side of our chakras is where we can source power and nourishment from a vertical stream of divine light energy from above.”

In other words, while the front sides of our chakras are about output, the back sides are about input.

Yet in Western societies, most of us live mainly from the front side of our chakras, which gets us out of balance and can’t be maintained indefinitely. Wendy says that when we receive adequate nourishment from our back body, the front sides of our chakras can stop working so hard and settle back into the body. With better balance, we experience more peace, resiliency and buoyancy—as well as healthier boundaries.

Wendy explains that leaning into the back side of our chakras gives us precious gifts. “The front of the root chakra is about survival, safety, and trust, but when you lean into the back side, it’s about receiving and abundance—the ability to feel safe and grounded here in the physical world.” The sacral chakra helps us trust the flow of life; the solar plexus chakra gives us confidence so we can manifest our true calling in the world; the heart chakra offers self-love; the throat chakra offers deep intuitive listening; and the third eye chakra supports clairvoyance and clear inner vision The crown chakra—the only one that doesn’t have a front and back side—is about faith, divinity, and infinite potential.

In the six-minute guided meditation below, Wendy teaches how to nourish and balance all of our chakras by visualizing what she calls a “waterfall of grace”—a cascading river of light and life force energy that flows down through the entire back side of our bodies. “When we learn to lean back and surrender to the waterfall, we feel how cleansing, balancing, and restorative it is. Our front body can relax as we consciously breathe in this divine support, peace, and comfort—a boundless source of universal love that helps you relax and trust in the natural flow of life.”
