Early this morning, as I gave our dogs Henry and Leo their first farm walk of the day, I thought about my father standing on the very same soil four decades ago, helping me and my husband build new supports for our raspberry plants. I can see him so clearly…relaxed, happy, and completely focused. He loved his work and never viewed it as a chore.

These official remembrance days are of tremendous importance, but I personally never need a reminder. As the daughter of two Holocaust survivors, a day doesn’t go by when I don’t think about that horrific time in history. The Holocaust lives inside of me, and my whole being is perpetually trying to come to terms with it.

Elliot and I grew close during the final months of Tey’s life in early 2010, and our friendship has continued to grow ever since. Healing from the loss of his beloved wife of half a century was a slow and sorrowful process for Elliot, but eventually, after almost five years, he knew the time had come to move forward with his life.
