Manifesting the World We Want to Live In

In addition to working hard to affect transformation in the “real world”—getting people to vote, stand up against injustice, and help those in need—I’ve grown to believe that we can also be powerful changemakers in the energetic realms by amplifying the love in our hearts and sowing much-needed seeds of positivity. Visualization, done together in big groups to magnify the impact, may actually be able to function as a type of “spiritual elevator” for us right now.

Joe Jedeikin’s Story: The Dangers of Discrimination

No matter our age, we must never stop trying to uncover the ways we have been taught to hate and fear. We must also work towards developing more tolerance, acceptance and generosity—as well as the bravery and determination to take a stand for justice. Honest and self-aware people like Joe Jedeikin are helping move the world in the right direction, and I feel very grateful that he has shared his story and wisdom with the world.

Lessons from Luna

A few months ago, I wrote one of my favorite blog posts, Lessons from Leo, sharing what I’ve learned about life from our sweet, quirky yellow lab puppy, Leo. The essay inspired my friend, Lisa Rudolph to ask herself: “What beautiful insights and revelations is my dog Luna offering that I haven’t yet taken the time to notice and fully appreciate?”

One in a Million

A few months ago, I participated in a wonderful online event with the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles for Quest for Eternal Sunshine. Afterwards, the museum let me know that a Holocaust survivor and frequent lecturer at the museum—a man named William Harvey—wanted to connect with me.

Wisdom from the Wise

A few weeks ago, I shared my excitement about Quest for Eternal Sunshine’s inclusion in Parade Magazine’s list of the top 24 memoirs of 2020. Since then, I’ve listened to two of the other books on the list, Glennon Doyle’s Untamed, and Alicia Keys’ More Myself: A Journey. Both were powerful—honest, intimate, inspiring, and filled with wisdom. Because I love great wisdom-packed quotes, I want to share my favorites from each book with you.

Wisdom from the Stars

This week, I’m enjoying being part of Debra Silverman’s Conversations with Destiny online summit, where she’s been having intimate conversations with twenty-two top experts in their fields. This focus of the summit is on what astrological birth charts reveal about peoples’ personalities and life’s purpose, and it’s been quite entertaining to watch Debra blow everyone’s minds during these fascinating and thought provoking interviews.

Reflections on Independence Day

As 4th of July approaches during this time of tremendous upheaval, myriad thoughts and emotions are arising for me. As the daughter of two immigrant refugees who found sanctuary in America after surviving a horrific genocide, I was raised to be extremely grateful to this country—to “kiss the soil” I was standing on.

Wisdom from a Writing Workshop

One of my earliest disappointments caused by the coronavirus was the cancelation of a weekend writing workshop I’d been eager to attend at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur with Ellen Bass and Roxan McDonald. So, when I heard these two gifted, inspiring writers were teaming up to teach a one-day Zoom class in mid-June focused on writing and gratitude, I immediately signed up.

Healing Racialized Trauma

There is a loud a “NO!” being shouted by so many in our country right now. “NO!” to entrenched prejudice, oppression, and inequity; “NO!” to the pain of unrelenting insecurity, violence, and murder; and “NO!” to a culture that accepts a hierarchy of people based on the color of their skin, and the humiliation and denigration of sacred human lives.

Lessons from Leo

During this pandemic, my husband Drew and I frequently reflect on the many things we previously took for granted, and the aspects of our lives we feel especially thankful for. When it comes to cataloging our gratitude, our fox-colored yellow lab puppy, Leo, always makes it to the top of the list.

Remember the Good

During the years I was writing Quest for Eternal Sunshine, I was steeped in my father’s story and philosophy. One of the things that struck me the most about his journey from being a tortured Holocaust survivor to one of the most joyous people I ever met was his determination to remember the good.

Mothering in a Pandemic

Yesterday, my two-and-a-half-year-old, Feliciano, dumped his bowl of quinoa on the kitchen floor that hasn’t been mopped in two weeks, got down on his hands and knees, and lapped it up without his hands pretending to be a dog. I didn’t stop him. I was far too relieved that he was finally engaged in an activity that allowed me to eat in peace.

Meet Hilary Nicholls

I will never forget how I first met Hilary Nicholls. Twelve years ago, I ran into a friend who was in the midst of a heartbreaking family tragedy. But instead of appearing pained and exhausted, my friend was literally glowing. She looked at me and said: “I just had an incredible session with a woman named Hilary Nicholls. She wouldn’t let me pay her, but she told me I would be sending someone to her. I think that someone is meant to be you.”

Myra’s Journey—Eighteen Years as a Student of Soto Zen Buddhism

Those of you who have read Quest for Eternal Sunshine already know that my childhood was far from typical. When I was seven, my family joined an alternative spiritual community called the Pathwork. “The Guide”—a spirit channeled through the leader, Eva—explained exactly how the universe works and the best ways to evolve both spiritually and emotionally.
